Keystone Cement Co. operates a
cement manufacturing facility on 850 acres in Bath, PA. Since
1976, Keystone has blended high-BTU liquid hazardous waste into
fuel which is used as a supplement to coal in its cement
manufacturing process. Keystone’s fuel blending operation is
known as Giant Resource
Recovery-Keystone (GRR-Keystone). Keystone was the
first cement company in the United States to have an energy
recovery program of this type. Keystone beneficially uses 17
million gallons of waste-derived fuel annually to replace
approximately 50% of the coal requirement.
GRR-Keystone’s hazardous waste management operation includes
four waste fuel storage tanks with a combined capacity of
93,000 gallons. All tanks are above ground, nitrogen blanketed,
and agitated. Keystone also operates an on-site laboratory and
offers off-site rail transfer facility services.
In December 2009, Keystone began operating an entirely new
cement manufacturing facility at the Bath location. This plant
is one of the most modern in the United States producing nearly
double the cement of the previous plant. This new plant has
enabled Keystone to better serve the growing needs of its
customers while at the same time reducing plant emissions.
